In collaboration with our colleague Dr. Alisha Knight, Professor of English Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, we have organized the following two-part workshop.
Inclusive Excellence, Intellectual Diversity, and Free Expression in Our Classrooms.
Incidents like the harassment of Black students on College Avenue and the formal recognition of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes have heightened concerns about the role faculty can and should play in supporting students. This workshop will examine the perceived tensions between academic freedom, freedom of expression, and institutional commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion. In addition to discussing best practices for discussing campus events in real-time in your classrooms, engaging student concerns as teachers, “lowering the heat” during challenging discussions, and navigating moral disagreements, you will consider the impact a Washington College Statement of Free Expression would have on our college community. A follow up workshop will be held later this spring for faculty who are interested in collaborating on a free expression statement and piloting its use in their classrooms.
First workshop: Wednesday, February 15, 2023. 4:30 – 6:00 pm | Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall
Second workshop: Monday, March 20, 2023. 4:30 – 6:00 pm | Hynson Lounge, Hodson Hall
